About the Breed
Why are Border Collies considered the most intelligent dog breed?
Border Collies were developed over centuries to think independently while working alongside shepherds. Their intelligence goes far beyond learning commands – they excel at problem-solving, adapting to new situations, recognizing patterns, and communicating with their handlers.

Are Border Collies good family dogs?

Are Border Collies good with children?

Puppy Questions
At what age do puppies go home?
Our puppies typically join their new families at eight weeks of age, after receiving early socialization, age-appropriate veterinary care, and the foundational experiences included in our Puppy Development Program.
How do you choose which puppy goes to each family?
We thoughtfully match puppies based on temperament, confidence, energy level, and each family's lifestyle and goals. Our priority is creating lifelong partnerships rather than allowing families to simply choose based on appearance or color.
What comes home with my puppy?
Each Gold Creek Ranch puppy goes home with age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, registration paperwork, health records, and information to help your puppy transition successfully into its new home.
Do you offer lifetime support?
Absolutely. We consider ourselves part of your puppy's journey for life and are always happy to answer questions or offer guidance as your puppy grows.
Training
Are Border Collies easy to train?
Border Collies are exceptionally eager learners. They respond best to positive, reward-based training that encourages problem-solving and builds confidence. Because they're highly observant, they often learn from everyday experiences—not just formal training sessions.
What training method do you recommend?

When should training begin?

Exercise
How much exercise does a Border Collie need?
Every dog is different, but Border Collies benefit from a combination of physical activity and mental enrichment.
Daily walks, training sessions, games, hikes, and problem-solving activities are often more fulfilling than exercise alone.
Is mental stimulation really that important?
Yes. Border Collies were bred to think. Training, puzzles, scent games, and learning new skills provide valuable mental exercise that helps them feel fulfilled.
Health
How long do Border Collies live?
Many Border Collies live 12–15 years or longer with excellent care, proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, and responsible breeding.
What health testing do your breeding dogs receive?
Our breeding dogs undergo comprehensive genetic health testing before being included in our breeding program. Health is one of the many factors we consider when planning each litter.
Should I spay or neuter my Border Collie?
This decision should be made in consultation with your veterinarian and may depend on your individual dog's health, development, and lifestyle. We'll gladly discuss our recommendations with puppy families.
Grooming
Do Border Collies shed?
Yes. Border Collies have a double coat and shed throughout the year, with heavier seasonal shedding in the spring and fall.
How often should they be groomed?
Regular brushing helps remove loose hair, prevent mats, and maintain a healthy coat. Bathing is typically only needed as necessary.
Family Life
Can Border Collies live with other dogs?

Are they good with cats?
